There are many types of effect processor available depending on what you want to use it for. For guitarists there
are many ways of achieving your desired sound. You can buy your effects
singularly in the form of individual pedals or the more cost effective
multi effect processors that have many effects built into one unit. At
the top of the range there are professional 19" rack mounted processors
controlled by floor mounted switchboards.
For the studio although most multitracks contain various effects built in it can often be desirable to have more or concentrate on a certain area.
For live use although many desks (powered or unpowered) will have effects built in it still can be useful to have a separate processor for special effects etc.
