There is a vast selection of mic options for recording use.
The best option for recording vocals and most instruments is usually a large diaphragm condenser (usually phantom powered by the recorder or mixer but sometimes battery powered) which will give a big rich sound. These microphones used to cost thousands but now with improved manufacturing techniques and production in the Far East, prices now start at under £100. A good studio microphone will last for decades so choose wisely.
You can also use handheld dynamic stage microphones which range in price from under £50 to models costing over £150 but for most purposes condensers will give much better results in the studio.
