Probably the most important products after the recording equipment itself!Although you can monitor your recordings using your hi-fi system there are inherent problems in this approach. Your hi-fi speakers, even expensive ones, will be voiced to sound 'nice', often different to other systems which is not what you want when you are trying to get a true picture of your recording and mix. To this end you really require a speaker system that is as 'flat' as possible. This is where recording monitors come in. Usually if it sounds good on a set of these it should sound good on normal domestic hi-fi.
Although you can get passive (ie separate speaker and
amplifier) systems we recommend active speaker systems. Why? Because amplifier
and speaker are perfectly matched, you have an easier setup and operation.
Headphones are also important both for recording and mixing. There are different types from fully enclosed to minimise leakage to open backed. Obviously you get what you pay for. Prices range from under £25 to £200.
